How to make my RES turtles to eat Greens?
Have two RES, one for the past 18 months and the other about a year.
Have been regularly feeding them frozen shrimps and prawns. This diet has made them grow quite big, 'coz a friend of mine has his RES almost same time frame but feeding them normal turtle food in the form of pellets and his RES have not grown as big. They are almost half the size of my RES.
I want to feed Green veggies (Iceberg Lettuce) to my turtles, butthey wont even look at them. I even tried by not feeding them for two days any thing else except the greens, but still to no avail............They would start swimming violently and try to bite my fingers when I approach them but would not even look towards the green.
What should I do to make them eat varied types of food, including greens, 'coz by the rate they are growing, they would out size their Tank very soon...........
DO NOT feed Iceberg lettuce!!! It has no nutritional value and may be part of why they are not eating it. Feed them Romaine lettuce, spinach, or other greens but NO Iceberg!
At 18 months, they should be at a size where you should only be feeding them every OTHER day.
Turtles do get fat and it is just as unhealthy as us over eating.
When you feed them a diet of nothing but meat, they are NOT going to willingly eat greens and it will NOT hurt them to go even a week without the meat offering.
My 3 two year old RES get fed pellet (primary), dried shrimp "OR" (not all and I rotate what they get) dried meal worms ONLY every other day and live worms, crickets or meal worms once every two weeks.
I give them cuttle bone for the needed calcium and they LOVE to chase it around and chew on it.
So then, stop so much meat feeding, give them romaine lettuce and just float a few pieces on top of their water and change it out daily until the stubborn little buggers realize that "THIS" is what they have to eat. Trust me, they will not starve to death.
You didn't say whether you offered fruit or not. They are suppose to like a variety of fruits like strawberries but mine so far will only nibble at apple slices (without the peel).
