Portable Photo Player
MP3 player, CD player, please tell me what to buy?

I have a large collection of rare music CDs which came from all over Africa since the 80s.

I want a portable player which I can download them all onto, and then add MP3 files, or MP4 files or whatever I should be buying these days (What is the difference anyway?? Is MP3 going to go out of date too? I still haven't recovered from the trauma of my vinyl collection becoming technologically obsolete...)

So PLEASE can anyone recommend what product and brand I should buy, which will let me save my CDs easily, and also play other file formats?
BTW I just want something for music, I don't need it to take photos, surf the internet and reheat pizzas for me as well...

mp3- a sound format (an mp3 player can play only music- not video).
mp4- a video format (an mp4 player can play both music and videos).

You didn't ask about a ripping software (to "rip" the music out of a cd- you can't just drag and drop or copy paste the music, and anyway- you will need to convert to mp3 because of the files sizes).
You can use CDex it's an open source software (which means it's free and legal):

http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/?q=download

This software can rip straight into mp3 file format (of to wav format) - the difference is in file size: a songs that is in mp3 format will be 2-3 MB , while the same one song can be 16-25 MB. now, multiply the number of songs in one CD (and several CDs)- and you can see the difference.

It's best that you backup all of the ripped files on your hard drive (or/and an external hard drive).
As for a player recommendation : most high capacity players are for videos, so you won't fing something that is more then 32 GB and doesn't play videos as well.
So, sure you have the expensive option of theIPods, but here are a few other ideas:
Archos players- modals no:

My advice to you is to look for the a used one or an older model- this will save you alot of money!
