Cheap Portable Multi-track Recording?
Ok: I run sound for a local band. They would like to release a live album (I don't know why). They want me to multitrack their big concert, take it home, mix it, do some overdubs and master it. I know how to do all of this but here is my problem: I am on a really tight budget right now and I need to find a multitrack recorder that has all of the following:
- It must be at least an 8 track, 12 or 16 is preferred
- It must have the same number of inputs as tracks (ie. 8 tracks with 8 ins) (either XLR or 1/4in)
- Needs to have good sound quality
- Needs to be able to be exported to my mac so I can do the rest of the work
- Needs to be relatively inexpensive (Under $800 if I can get away with it)

Just an idea...
Are you sure you wouldn't rather just go with a fire wire breakout box and use your mac as the recorder?
You can pick up the boxes for under 500 ...by way of example... http://www.zzounds.com/item--PRSFSPROJECT and in most cases if your computer has the horsepower you can stack or daisy chain.
With out knowing your system I can't say how well this option will work for you, but just as hip shot, if your system is less than 5 years old and not bargain basement, you should be able to handle recording 8 tracks of raw audio with ease. (I can get 6 on 533mhz athalon w an emu 1818 @44.1)
