Unformatted SD card photo recovery?

Okay, so I tried to copy the photos from an SD memory card onto my PC using my camera (with which i took the photos), but it says that the card is not formatted. I tried using another camera but it says the same thing. Can I save those photos by using a card reader, or some program? I can't afford to lose those photos...

1) Can you see the photos on the camera from the card?
2) Does the camera have memory of its own, independent of the card? The photos might be on the camera, not the card.
3) Is it the camera saying the card is not formatted or the computer?

In any case, you can try this:
1) get a USB card reader.
2) plug it into your USB port
3) insert the memory card into it.
4) run recovery software: http://www.digitalphotorecovery.com is one example; there are other packages out there.
5) hopefully it will recover what's on the card.
