Photo Megpix Question?
I have WORKED MY BUTT OFF getting shots to submit for some various contests. I don't have money for an expensive camera. I am using a Kodak z812IS this is an 8 megapixl camera w/ 12 times optical zoom Schnieder Kreuznauch lens
I keep it set at the highest quality - of 8 Megs.
The contest stipulates the original photo has to be at least 3 Megs. Seems like that should be just fine with an 8m camera set to the highest quality.
I still have shots in the camera. When I REVIEW the photos IN the camera - and look at SIZE it says 8 M - or thereabouts.( it has them as JPEG this camera does not do RAW)
HOWEVER-when I download them and go to view them in Photoshop. THERE THE SIZE Says 1meg or 2 megs etc. Tight shots of faces, etc say under 1M even tho they totaly fill the frame.
Is it the case that virtually NONE of my photos qualify since they show under 3 megs? Or did that just mean that it has to be taken with a camera that is at least a 3Megapixel camera?

Megapixels is not directly related to file size when compression is used. Furthermore, Jpeg is a lossy compression so file sizes will be even more unpredictable. In RAW or uncompressed TIFF formats, there is a more direct relationship between megapix and file size. In fact, uncompress images are about 3 times the megapixels in mega-bytes. That means your 8Mpixel camera would generate a 24MB uncompressed TIFF. Not to worry. If you contest stipulates megapixels and allows jpeg submissions, you should be good to go. Don't worry about the file size. I would suggest you use the lowest compression setting your camera allows (usually designated as "Fine" mode or some such).
