Physics Problem Help? ?
A stroboscopic photo of a club hitting a golf ball was made by Harold Edgerton in 1933. The ball was initially at rest, and the club was shown to be in contact with the club for about 0.0017 s. Also, the ball was found to end up with a speed of 1.7x10^2 ft/s. Assuming that the golf ball had a mass of 55 g, find the average force exerted by the club on the ball.
When I did it myself, I got 1676.4N
However, it keeps telling me that my answer is off by a multiple of ten.
Any idea why?
If I enter 167.64 or 16.76, it tells me the same thing.
I just looked at it again. The answer was simple. I forgot to switch from N to kN.
All I had to do was multiple my answer by 0.001 to get 1.68.
Thanks anyway.
170- ft/s = 51.8 m/s
Impulse equals the change in momentum. Also, impuls equals average force multiplied by time. So:
J = m*(vf - vi) = F*t
F = m*(vf - vi)/t = (0.055 kg)*(51.8 m/s - 0 m/s)/(0.0017 s) = 1677 N
