which is the best lowest price prosumer digital video camera?
I want to film a movie, some music videos and do some documentaries, so I want to make sure they are 24f, to give it the look, but i also cant afford those heavy hitters.
good audio options are a plus.
and removable lens would be nice but is not really that important to me
In my opinion, the items that differentiate a consumer camcorder from a prosumer camcorder are:
Lens diameter greater than 43mm
Imaging chip(s) 1/3" or larger
Audio-in connector(s) and manual audio control
The other stuff - including lots of manual controls on the outside of the camcorder rather then accessed through a menu (separate zoom and focus rings, aperture, audio control, among others) generally follow the larger lens size and imaging chips.
"24f" is Canon's pseudo-24p. It is up there with Sony's "CineFrame" feature. Neither are true 24p.
The Canon HV20/HV30/HV40 and the Sony HDR-HC9 are about as close as I can get - but they have small lenses and imaging chips, so they don't really qualify as "prosumer" if you agree with my guidelines. With these lenses and imaging chips, they don't do a very good job in low-light environments. The Canon HV40 is the only one that does true/native 24p and 30p frame capture.
In the standard definition world, the Canon GL2 and Sony DCR-VX2100 would be the starting point for "prosumer". In the high definition world, the Sony HDR-FX1000 and HDR-FX7 fit the entry blocks.
The jump to pro-grade is basically the move to XLR based audio connectors and firmware inside the camcorder that provides more options for the shooter. The easy example of this is to point to the Sony HVR-Z1U as the pro-grade sibling to the HDR-FX1/FX1000 and the Sony HVR-V1U as the pro-grade sibling to the HDR-FX7. The standard def Panasonic DVX100 and high definition HVX200 are also worthy pro-grade camcorders... as are the Canon XL and XHA1... among others.
The only removable lens systems in this class - of which I am aware - are the Sony HVR-Z7U (for high def) and Canon XL for standard def. For most other higher-end consumer/prosumer/pro camcorders, there are lens add-ons which are generally limited to tele-macro, wide-angle (including fish-eye) and tele lenses - but they are added to the camcorder, not used to replace the existing lenses.
