adapter help with an electronic item purchased in canada but being used in australia.?
My parents recently went to canada and purchase a digital photo frame. the instructions are in french and the only words we can make out is that it needs to be plugged into a 120v outlet. The adapter iteself says input 120v ~60hz output: 9v. In australia the outlet voltage is 240. So my question is, can i add something to this adapter or purchase a new one, what can i do to use the digital photo frame? THANKS!
You could use a 240 to 120V step down transformer, but beware there are gadgets that use just a diode to halve the power. These are a danger, and will destroy the adaptor as well as the diode, and maybe blow the fuse. Make sure it is a transformer, a lump of iron. The smallest they have will do.
You could buy a new adaptor, 240V in and 9V out. You need to know the current rating too, say 300mA, and whether it is AC or DC. You can use any adapter with a current larger than the rating, but not smaller. Make sure it is AC or DC as the original. There is usually a symbol to show this, like a straight line for DC or a squiggle for AC.
If in doubt use a photo of the adapter label or take it to the shop with you. Jaycar or Dick Smiths maybe..
