will a digital cable box function between different providers?
I am a looking at purchasing a used digital cable box a motorola dct2500 provided by Shaw, I have rogers basic cable and see that rogers also uses the same cable box, will the box work interchangeable or is their a lock on the box from shaw that will now allow it to work with rogers?

No, you will not be able to use this box on the Rogers cable network. Even if you picked up an identical model to those being used on Rogers network, you would not be able to get the equipment registered to use at your address. The reason for this, is that each box has a unique serial number and MAC address that has to be already listed in Rogers inventory. They will not add foreign boxes into this inventory database, so only equipment that has been sold by Rogers or an authorized Rogers sales agent (Future Shop) will be useful.
