500GB Western Digital my book essential desk top hard drive. can I down load micro soft works and open office.?

I need to use it as an extension hard drive to my main computer, running microsoft works and open office as well as PDF Suite. Keeping and working on all my documents and files in these programs, freeing up space on the computer hard drive.
P.S I am an author that's why I want to keep what I am working on separate from the computer.

You can do it, but you might have some issues if you change computers. In stalling software on an external device isn't a good idea in Windows, because more often that not, the installer will have to place certain files on the main system drive. Plus, the profile information for your user account for those apps (especially OpenOffice) will wind up in your user profile, which is always stored on the system drive.

If your computer goes down or you have to reinstall Windows for whatever reason, the applications on the external drive might not work properly, if at all.

I would definitely use the external drive for your file storage, and you can work on this file to and from that drive. But I would install the application software on the main drive.
