How to format a 4gb memory card for a LG VX8300?

I've been trying to format this 4gb memory card for my cell phone but it keeps telling me it failed to format the card. I've tried adding sub-folders on the memory card that are the same as if it had been formatted by the phone but it still won't recognize it. Any ideas on how to get this to work?
It is a micro SD HC card. So that means my phone wont support it?

Is it an SD card or an SDHC card? Most SD cards 4G's & up are HC (high capacity) cards. They use a different format that most cameras & cell phones don't support.
